OneOcean Port Vell Final Phase Nears End

In August, Barcelona-based OneOcean Port Vell plans to complete the last stage of its development, bringing its slip total to 158. It’s the final step in a five-year transformation of a basin into an attraction for home-berthed and transient yachts and megayachts.

Construction on OneOcean Port Vell, started as Marina Port Vell, kicked off in 2011. The basin, walking distance from the heart of Barcelona, had been serving as a marina since 1992. It was created back then for the Summer Olympics. Prior to that, the old port of Barcelona was unfortunately run down, with empty factories and warehouses.

While OneOcean Port Vell and its land-based amenities have been open for a while, the last phase is seeing eight slips be added. They’re dedicated to megayachts from 98 to 262 feet (30 to 80 meters). Overall, the marina can accommodate megayachts to 623 feet (190 meters). It’s already hosted some of the world’s largest yachts, too. Eclipse was on site a few years ago. Earlier this month, when we paid a visit, the newly delivered Ulysses was dockside. That’s her bow below, with Paraffin and Ilona across the other side of the marina. Tango was there, too, though not visible. To put OneOcean Port Vell’s capacity into perspective, Ulysses occupied only part of a side-to area. Plenty of room lay in front of her for another new delivery set to arrive two days later, Dilbar.

The owners, guests, and crew of the megayachts making their way to OneOcean Port Vell have abundant services at their disposal. A vibrantly decorated crew lounge lets capable hands take a break off the boat. OneOcean Port Vell treats crew to barbecues and get-togethers on occasion throughout the year. The property’s restaurant welcomes diners for lunch and dinner, as does a tapas bar. A wellness center, for beauty and body treatments, plus a gym are attractive amenities, too. (The day of our visit, the beauty area was closed, due to the staff providing manicures and pedicures aboard one of the yachts.) The wellness center is joined by a business center and reception area in the Gallery building. The OneOcean Port Vell reception staff can provide maps of downtown Barcelona plus recommend places for sightseeing and shopping. Finally, a number of marine businesses, offering crew services, insurance, linens sourcing, and more, have offices on site to assist with additional needs.

OneOcean Port Vell’s architecture recently won an award for its design. The restaurant, for example, was hailed for its lattice-covered look (at top), plus glass walls and alfresco terrace. The latter two permit beautiful views out over the marina and the city. Between the views through the glass walls and the hanging sea plants inside, the ambiance is welcoming even in cooler temperatures.
